Jargon that comes up a lot in corona-related news

In the case of the corona crisis, words such as Karantina (quarantine) and Isolasi (quarantine), which would be unheard of in normal times, were seen and heard on the internet and television, but although the news sources were different, the words used were similar. If you learn Indonesian words related to current affairs, it will be easier for your associative memory to work if you learn them them in a thematic manner, because the same words are usually used when there is news about WFH (telecommuting), Social Distancing and New Normal are major enough to be in the running for the grand prize in Japan, so there's no need to mention them, but there are some terms that I've heard of but feel uncomfortable if you can't remember their meanings or synonyms, so I've carefully selected a few to explain.

ODR (Persons at Risk of Infection) OTG (Asymptomatic Patients) ODP (Observation Subject) PDP (Patients Under Surveillance)

  • ODR=Orang Dalam Risiko
Seseorang dikategorikan ODR manakala dirinya baru datang dari wilayah yang terjangkit corona virus. (A person who has just come from a corona-infected area is classified as an infectious risk carrier.)
  • ODG=Orang Tanpa Gejala:gejala(symptoms)
  • ODP=Orang Dalam Pemantauan:pantau(Observe.)
ODP harus menjalani isolasi di rumah dan kondisinya akan dipantau selama dua minggu.(The subject is isolated at home and needs to be followed up for two weeks.)
  • PDP=Pasien Dalam Pengawasan
Pengawasan yang ketat diterapkan pada pasien PDP supaya jangan sampai mengalami perburukan.(Patients under surveillance are subject to strict observation to ensure they do not deteriorate.)

Wabah (Mass Infection) Epidemi (Epidemic) Endemi (Endemic) Pandemi (Pandemic Explosion)

Perbedaan antara keempat skenario penyebaran penyakit di atas adalah persoalan skala.(The difference between the four disease spread scenarios above is a matter of scale.)

First understand the difference between normal sakit (illness) and wabah, and then use them according to customary practice, depending on the size of the scale.

  • wabah
Bayangkan apabila tiba-tiba jumlah anak kecil yang terkena diare meningkat di sebuah tempat penitipan anak. Satu atau dua anak sakit mungkin saja normal di hari-hari biasa, tapi jika 15 anak sekaligus menderita diare, ini berarti wabah.(When mass diarrhea occurs among children in a nursery, it is considered normal sakit if there are one or two children, but if 15 people suffer from diarrhea at the same time, it is treated as wabah.)
  • epidemi
    1. Epidemi adalah wabah yang menyebar di area geografis yang lebih luas.(Epidemi is Wabah's expansion into the wider region.)
    2. Epidemi mengacu pada penularan atau infeksi penyakit dalam skala yang lebih luas daripada wabah.(Epidemi refers to the transmission of a disease on a broader scale than Wabah.)
    3. Dia menulari beberapa anggota keluarga.(He infected several members of his family.)
  • endemi
    1. Epidemi berubah menjadi endemi. (An epidemic turns into an endemic disease.)
    2. Endemi adalah penyakit yang menyerang lingkup yang lebih kecil dibanding pandemi.(An epidemic is a disease that attacks a narrower area than a pandemic.)
  • pandemi
    1. Penyakit sudah menyebar ke seluruh dunia hingga sulit dikendalikan.(The disease has already spread around the world and is difficult to control.)
    2. Pandemi adalah tingkat tertinggi untuk darurat kesehatan global.(A pandemic is the highest level of global health emergency.)

R0(basic rate of reproduction)Rt(effective reproduction number)

The number of reproductions is the average number of people directly infected by one infected person.

  • R0=reproduksi awal(basic reproduction number)
    1. The average number of new infections that an infected person produces when he or she enters a population that is not yet immune to the disease and corresponds to the prime infectious capacity of the pathogen.
    2. Angka pertambahan kasus tanpa adanya intervensi atau secara alami.(No intervention or spontaneous increase in numbers)
  • Rt=reproduksi efektif (effective reproduction number)
    1. The actual number of reproductions that occur in real life society based on efforts to reduce infections, such as hand washing, masking, activity restrictions and lockdowns.
    2. Rt yaitu angka penambahan kasus yang terjadi di lapangan setelah mendapatkan berbagai intervensi.(Rt is a number that increases after various interventions.)

Local transmission(Prevalence in the geographic area) Herd immunity(collective immunity)

  • Local transmission
Penularan penyakit saat pasien berada di lokasinya saat ini.(Disease transmission when the patient is in their current location.)
  • Herd immunity
    1. It is an indirect protective effect that occurs when a large portion of the population is immune, providing a means of protection for those who are not immune and slowing the spread of infection.
    2. Imunitas kelompok terjadi dengan pemberian vaksin pada masyarakat luas.(Mass immunity is caused by administering the vaccine to a wide area.)

Flattening the curve(Slowing down the spread of infection = flattening the curve)

  • It is meant to slow down the propagation of COVID-19.
Usaha flattening the curve meliputi peningkatan fasilitas kesehatan, social distancing, physical distancing, isolasi, dan karantina.(Efforts to flatten the curve include improving health care facilities, social distance, physical distance, isolation, and quarantine.)

BNPB(National Disaster Management Office)

  • Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana
    tanggulang(Work on and defend)

Gugus Tugas Percepatan Penanganan COVID-19(New Coronavirus Rapid Response Task Force)

In the Japanese news, it is often referred to as the New Corona Emergency Response Headquarters (Task Force).

  • It is often translated as "COVID-19 task force," which is a gugus (group) of tugas (mission), and thus a "task force" (unit formed for the purpose of the mission).
  • Penanganan is the noun form of tangan, which means "handling" and is similar to BNPB's penanggulangan.

A word that comes up a lot in Corona-related news

The reason why we often feel a sense of déjà vu when we see words in the news and think, "I've heard this before, but it's slightly different", is because Indonesian changes from a base word to a noun or a verb, and verb prefixes are sometimes abbreviated depending on the situation, so there are many cases where the words are actually slightly different from the words we've seen or heard before, and once we focus on corona-related themes and sort out the base words and similar words, we should be able to roughly understand them.

  • peristiwa(event)
